Overview

The goal in designing the Basilisk labels was to create a classic look that connects to the legendary mythological creature, the Basilisk. Basilisk Spiced Rum is a unique liquor that stands out among similar rums, offering a more upscale feel. It appeals to adults who enjoy rum with a smoky taste and a mythical origin story.

SOLUTION

When designing Basilisk, I encountered a significant challenge in illustrating a basilisk, primarily due to the limited number of historical accounts and references available about this intriguing creature, as well as the scarcity of visual representations. After conducting extensive research, I was fortunate to discover an old-style illustration in the creative commons that captured the essence of the brand perfectly. The overall design employs a strikingly vibrant fiery orange-red color, which stands out beautifully against an off-white label, evoking the appearance of aged parchment. Additionally, the packaging incorporates Burford, a European-influenced display typeface, paired with Mercury for the subheads and body copy, creating a cohesive and visually appealing presentation.
